Olympic Moments

Congratulations to the US men’s swimming team for a thrilling win yesterday over the French in the 4×100m relay. And a word of advice to the French, there is no upside to smack talk. You either lose and look like a jackass, or you win and look like a jackass.

To capture the real spirit of the games, here’s a clip from the 1992 Barcelona games that is inspirational.

PicLens

Posted June 18th, 2008 by Thomas

This isn’t really a tech blog, but PicLens has to be the coolest browser plug-in I’ve ever seen. And it doesn’t just work with Firefox (which you should be using, btw).

It creates a 3D environment for viewing a bunch of photos at a glance, so if you search Google for photos or you visit Flickr a lot, it allows you to more easily view your results by flying around all of the images. It also supports Youtube searches and plays the videos right in PicLens.

Hard to explain in a blog, you just have to see it to believe it.

SFX Artist Stan Winston 1946-2008

Posted June 16th, 2008 by Thomas

Even if you don’t know his face or his name, you know his work. Stan is responsible for some of the most memorable creatures ever put on the big screen. He created the creatures in John Carpenter’s The Thing, Aliens, Terminator 2, and Jurassic Park, among many many others. He died at just 62 yesterday. There are few legends in the SFX industry and Stan is unquestionably one of the biggest.

It seems like this has been the year for untimely deaths. Heath Ledger, Brad Renfro, Tim Russert, Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack all gone well before their time.

Barnes & Noble

Posted April 18th, 2008 by Thomas

Out of the all the summaries of Lost Mission at the various online stores, this one from Barnes & Noble is my personal favorite, outside of Vanguard’s.

Five American soldiers training in the Alpine mountains of Northern Italy face the ultimate test of endurance and psychological strength when a mysterious sniper begins stalking their every move. It was supposed to be a typical training exercise, but when the bullets started to fly all bets were off. A sniper is gunning for the soldiers under the cover of the dense local foliage, and it quickly becomes apparent that the lieutenant in charge is in way over his head. If they don’t make it to their rendezvous in time, chances are good that no one in the squad will make it out of the forest alive. But who can be trusted when your own eyes and ears - much less your fellow soldiers - prove hopelessly unreliable? –Jason Buchanan

“Wolverine & The X-Men” series debuts on Nicktoons in January

Posted March 20th, 2008 by Thomas

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel just announced that the “Wolverine & The X-Men” will make its debut in the US on Nicktoons in January 2009. I have been working on the visual effects for this show for a few months and we’ve been eagerly awaiting an official announcement of the air date.

It’s exciting to be part of the Marvel universe and working with these characters with such a huge and loyal following.

The Objective is complete!

Posted March 9th, 2008 by Thomas

The Objective, a new film by Dan Myrick (The Blair Witch Project), is now complete and will soon be entering the festival circuit. It has already been accepted to a major festival.

The Objective is my second collaboration as a visual effects artist with Dan, the first being The Believers which was released last year. I am also currently working on a new Raw Feed film by director Ben Rock.
